Wheelchair Sports Alberta (WSA) is thrilled to congratulate one of our very own Alberta athletes, Kurt Timmons, on his incredible accomplishment of being selected for the 2023/24 Wheelchair Rugby Canada National Team Pool. Joining the ranks of 23 elite athletes, Kurt is currently training for the opportunity to represent Canada and secure a spot on the Team Canada roster in upcoming major tournaments.

Kurt’s journey as a wheelchair rugby player began five years ago, and he has since become an integral member of the Alberta wheelchair rugby scene. He first found out about the sport from Tim Fennessey, a former player, who introduced Kurt to a tournament in Calgary shortly after his injury. This experience sparked Kurt’s passion for wheelchair rugby.
Playing for Alberta enabled Kurt to develop his skills alongside high-level athletes with Paralympic experience, fostering both personal and collective growth. “Playing for Alberta is awesome,” says Kurt. “We have lots of extra chairs and are always looking for new players! It’s a lot of fun being part of a tight-knit community.
As Kurt continues to advance in his wheelchair rugby career, making it into the National Team Pool, he is eager to seize the incredible opportunity to represent Canada. “I’m looking forward to the travel opportunities provided by the national team,” Kurt shared. “I use it as motivation to earn a spot in the top 12.”
Join us in giving Kurt a mighty congratulations on this fantastic achievement! As we cheer on Team Canada this season, stay tuned to the WSA and Wheelchair Rugby Canada social media for updates about the team Canada roster, competitions, and more. Here’s to an exciting season ahead!
