Canada Winter Games – Basketball Tryouts

Team Alberta will be holding an Open Invitation training camp to all Alberta athletes that are interested in trying out for the Alberta Canada Winter Games team in February 2019.

Details below:

Dates: Saturday, June 23rd

Court time 1pm – 4pm / 5pm – 7pm

Sunday, June 24th

Court time 9am – 12pm

Location:  Edmonton Saville Centre (11610-65 Avenuehttp://www.savillecentre.ca/ located at the South University of Alberta Campus

Athletes are to bring the following to training camp:

– Sport Wheelchair

– Spare equipment that you might need

– Water Bottle

– Snacks (A supper break will be included and their are nutritious restaurants on site)

– A reversible jersey with two colors

– Alberta Medical Form

There is no Fee for this camp however the attached Alberta Medical Form must be filled out and either sent into me ahead of time or on the day of camp.  This form will be used throughout the year for training and competition.  The form only needs to be filled out if you have not filled out the form before or your medical situation has changed in the last 6 months and you are on some new medications or updated injury information.

Athletes traveling from out of town as long as you are travelling in a group and gas receipts are submitted you will be reimbursed.  Athletes coming from a location where no other athletes are located your gas will be reimbursed.

The host hotel for the camp will be Holiday Inn Express 4485 Gateway Blvd https://www.ihg.com/holidayinn/hotels/us/en/edmonton/yegem/hoteldetail?cm_mmc=GoogleMaps-_-HI-_-CA-_-YEGEM.  Rooms fees are paid for and you will just need to place a credit card for incidental charges.

Athletes that are in close proximity to Edmonton including Calgary athletes hotel rooms will be covered for the Saturday night stay.  Athletes from Grand Prairie and farther South of Calgary a Friday arrival and hotel room will be covered.

2016 Birmingham National Wheelchair Tennis Championships

Congratulations to Team Alberta athletes Laurie Zalmanowitz and Kyle Thompson who competed at the 2016 Birmingham National Wheelchair Tennis Championships held Oct 27-30 in Vancouver !

Laurie finished first in Men’s (Singles) Flight 1 putting him 6th place overall in the competition.

Kyle finished third in Men’s (Singles) Flight 2 putting him 13th place overall.

Laurie & Kyle also competed as a Doubles team making it to the Quarter Final before being eliminated.

Fernandez, Buis seal first Roland Garros titles

Wheelchair tennis crowned two new Grand Slam champions on Saturday when Gustavo Fernandez of Argentina and Marjolein Buis of Netherlands delivered winning performances at Roland Garros.

For the 22-year-old Fernandez it was three times lucky in hoisting the trophy after defeating reigning Australian Open champion Gordon Reid of Great Britain 76(4) 61. Fernandez had previously been in two Grand Slam finals – at the 2014 Australian and US Opens – but lost both times to Shingo Kunieda of Japan.
